While The Match has traditionally used a team format, it switched things up in The Match IX. February’s event saw Rory McIlroy outlast Max Homa, Rose Zhang and Lexi Thompson in a fee-for-all under the lights in West Palm Beach.
The Match will be back in West Palm Beach later this week—albeit at Breakers West Country Club instead of Park City Municipal Golf Course—with some additional tweaks to the format.
Thursday’s competition will feature a pair of team matches utilizing scramble play. For those unfamiliar, scramble is a team format in which each golfer plays his or her own shot but teams choose the best lie from which to hit successive shots after teeing off. Once a lie is chosen, both players will hit from the selected spot.
The Format: A New Twist
This year, The Match: Superstars introduces a thrilling mix of team and individual play:
- Thursday Night – Scramble Format
- Teams of two will compete in a scramble play format, where both players hit from the best lie after each shot.
- Matchups:
- Bill Murray & Wayne Gretzky vs. Charles Barkley & Ken Griffey Jr.
- Mark Wahlberg & Michael Phelps vs. Nate Bargatze & Blake Griffin
- Friday Night – Individual Match Play
- Winners from Thursday’s matches will face off in head-to-head individual match play.
- The ultimate winner will walk away with a $1 million prize.
Since its inception, The Match has combined top-tier golf with entertainment, pitting legendary golfers and celebrities against one another in innovative formats. The event has evolved over the years, with past highlights including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Rory McIlroy. While professional golfers have headlined earlier editions, The Match: Superstars leans into its celebrity appeal, showcasing a lighthearted yet competitive atmosphere.
